What helps with sunburn?

Red, hot skin, pain when touched, a feeling of tightness or even blisters – yes, it’s a sunburn. Summer pleasures can sometimes quickly turn into suffering for the skin, especially if we forget to protect ourselves from UV rays. But the good news is that even if you get sunburned, you can help your skin recover faster and reduce the discomfort.

We've rounded up what really helps with sunburn – from natural remedies to dermatologist recommendations. Find out everything you need to know about SOS after-sun care.

Why does skin burn?

When we spend too much time in the sun without protection, ultraviolet (UV) rays damage skin cells. The body perceives this as an injury and starts an inflammatory process - redness, swelling, pain appear. Sometimes the burn does not appear until the next day, so we often underestimate the danger.

The main signs of sunburn:

❌ Red and hot skin
❌ Feeling of tension
❌ Pain when touched
❌ Skin peeling or flaking after a few days
❌ Blisters (in more severe cases)

First aid: what to do immediately after a burn?

1. Cooling is the first step

First, cool the skin. This helps reduce inflammation and pain.

✅ Cool shower or compress with cold (but not ice!) water

✅ Avoid applying ice directly to the skin – it can make the situation worse

✅ Soothing masks - can be applied not only to the face but also to the most burned areas of the body.

2. Hydration is the most important part of skin rejuvenation

Sun-damaged skin loses moisture, so it is necessary to replenish it as soon as possible.

✅ Use light-textured lotions or gels (preferably with aloe vera or panthenol)
✅ Avoid oily, heavy creams that can "suffocate" skin pores
✅ Repeat moisturizing several times a day - your skin will "drink" like a sponge

TOP ingredients that help sunburned skin

🌿 Aloe Vera – cools, reduces redness, promotes healing
💧 Panthenol (Vitamin B5) – soothes and strengthens the skin barrier
🌼 Chamomile or calendula extract – anti-inflammatory effect
🥶 Menthol or eucalyptus – provides a short-term cooling effect (use with caution – may irritate sensitive skin)
🚫 Avoid alcohol-based lotions, scented products, strong acids, or retinoids

Important: What to do if blisters appear?

If the burn is severe and blisters have formed, do not pop them! This is a protective layer of skin that protects against infection. Just:

☑️ Leave your skin alone
☑️ Use antiseptic gel or hydrogel dressings
☑️ Watch for signs of infection – redness, pus, temperature

If your condition worsens, consult a doctor!

What else can you do:

🧊 Drink plenty of water – when you get burned, your body loses more fluids.
🧢 Wear light, natural fiber clothing so your skin can "breathe".
🌤 Avoid the sun for a few days - your skin needs time to recover.
🍉 Eat foods rich in antioxidants - berries, watermelon, tomatoes, spinach help fight cell damage.

Finally…

Sunburn is a sign that damage has been done to your skin. And while it can be treated, prevention is always the best strategy: use SPF daily, avoid intense midday sun, and maintain proper hydration.

Take care of your skin – it’s your largest organ, and it’s always working for your benefit. A sunburn is temporary, but the consequences (age spots, premature aging) can be long-lasting. So the next time you go outside – don’t forget your sunscreen. ☀️🧴

Your skin will thank you! ❤️
